As Europe tips over into a second recession, with anaemic growth of just 0.2 percent in the EU in the second quarter revealed on Tuesday, it is manifest that austerity has not worked, so the response, naturally, is: ‘More austerity!’

According to Spectrezine editor Steve McGiffen, Phillips may be the only journalist working in mainstream media who has the slightest inkling of what the European Union really is. And he assures us he is not saying that because Leigh is certainly the only mainstream journalist who has ever bought him a beer.

Too pessimistic
Leigh Philips is far too pessimistic. The EU Observer is an anti-EU site, so you don't expect to find praise of the EU there, but saying that democracy is being thrown into a volcano goes much too far. The attack on the euro is part of the ongoing collpase of the American dinosaur and in that kind of "conflictual" situation, things tend to get a bit authoritarian until the storm blows over (think of all the restrictions on freedom in WWII Britain, for example). And, of course, that is fundamentally what the voters want. Europeans are essentially non-ideological. It's results that count. They want the fire put out. They don't want a referendum on how to put the fire out while the house burns down! The American dinosaur won't last more than a few more years and then a new era will beging, not just for Europe but for the whole world. Now, that godd news!
