Novaya Gazeta calls for European parliamentary investigation of war in Caucasus

in:

Novaya Gazeta, the publication for which Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya worked before she was murdered, has issued an appeal to European institutions to launch an investigation of culpability in the war between Georgia and Russia:

Novaya Gazeta appeals to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, the European Commission, the OSCE

Dear Madams/Sirs:

The regulations of your organizations, the protocol restrictions and your status do not allow you to interfere in the war where involved are Russia, Georgia, also the unrecognized republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Nevertheless, we are convinced that peace and human life are above any bureaucratic rules. We appeal to you to hold hearings in the European Parliament as soon as possible, to hold a special urgent meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to carry out a parliamentary investigation and to define personal responsibility of the officials, whose actions in Georgia and Russia, and in the unrecognized republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, have caused the mass death of innocent civilians and led to crimes against humanity.
