Referendum on TTIP called for in the Netherlands

The Dutch Socialist Party, having successfully campaigned for a No vote in the referendum on the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, is now turning its attention to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). The TTIP is yet another neoliberal diktat masquerading as a trade treaty. (See TTIP – The State of Play by Anne-Marie Mineur )A petition for a further referendum. This time on the TTIP, has been taken by a number of organisations: Food Watch, the Transnational Institute (TNI) and two whose names translate respectively as ‘Environmental Defence’ and ‘More Democracy’. As the group’s website states , the TTIP “is a threat to democracy, it ensures that major corporations can demand enormous compensation for damages from governments in secret arbitration, it forces us to adopt often lower standards and less effective regulation from the US, while the treaty as a whole is being negotiated in secret by the EU.” The SP points out that a referendum would ensure the brad public debate which they have always demanded.
